TOEFL score converter: 0–120 to the new 1–6 scale
Quick answer
Starting from January 21, 2026, the way TOEFL iBT scores are reported has changed. Now, each section of the test and the overall score use a scale from 1 to 6. To give you an idea, if you score between 95 and 106 on the old 0–120 scale, that means you have a 5, which corresponds to CEFR level C1. If your score is between 86 and 94, that’s a 4.5, and if it’s between 72 and 85, you’re at a 4, both of which fall under CEFR level B2. Your overall score is simply the average of the scores from all four sections, rounded to the nearest half band. Plus, until January 2028, your score report will still show a comparable score on the old 0–120 scale.
0–120 total to 1–6 band
ETS has a chart that shows the lowest 0–120 total for each band. Each range below stops one point before the next band starts. On new score reports, the comparable 0–120 score is the middle of the band's range. For example, a 4.5 shows as 90.
| New band | Old 0–120 total | CEFR level |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 114–120 | C2 |
| 5.5 | 107–113 | C1 |
| 5 | 95–106 | C1 |
| 4.5 | 86–94 | B2 |
| 4 | 72–85 | B2 |
| 3.5 | 58–71 | B1 |
| 3 | 44–57 | B1 |
| 2.5 | 34–43 | A2 |
| 2 | 24–33 | A2 |
| 1.5 | 12–23 | A1 |
| 1 | 0–11 | A1 |
Section scores (0–30) to 1–6 band
Each section used to be scored from 0 to 30. Now each section gets its own 1–6 band, and the cut points are different for each section.
| Band | Reading | Listening | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 29–30 | 28–30 | 29–30 | 28–30 |
| 5.5 | 27–28 | 26–27 | 27–28 | 27 |
| 5 | 24–26 | 22–25 | 24–26 | 25–26 |
| 4.5 | 22–23 | 20–21 | 21–23 | 23–24 |
| 4 | 18–21 | 17–19 | 17–20 | 20–22 |
| 3.5 | 12–17 | 13–16 | 15–16 | 18–19 |
| 3 | 6–11 | 9–12 | 13–14 | 16–17 |
| 2.5 | 4–5 | 6–8 | 11–12 | 13–15 |
| 2 | 3 | 4–5 | 7–10 | 10–12 |
| 1.5 | 2 | 2–3 | 3–6 | 5–9 |
| 1 | 0–1 | 0–1 | 0–2 | 0–4 |
ETS's charts don't always match. For example, they differ for listening scores of 13 and 14. If your score is right at a cut point, treat the band as approximate. Check the ETS score scale page for the latest numbers.
How the overall band is worked out
ETS averages your four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. For example, bands of 5, 5, 5 and 5.5 average 5.125, which rounds to 5. Bands of 5, 5, 5.5 and 5.5 average 5.25, which rounds up to 5.5.
CEFR levels
Score reports also show a CEFR level.

- C15 and 5.5
- B24 and 4.5
- B13 and 3.5
- A22 and 2.5
- A11 and 1.5
Questions
What is a good TOEFL score on the new scale?
It depends on where you want to apply. Many universities ask for 80 to 100 on the 0–120 scale. That is roughly 4 to 5 on the new scale. Check each school's admissions page for its own requirement.
Are TOEFL scores from before 2026 still valid?
Yes. TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date. Scores from before January 21, 2026 stay on the 0–120 scale. Schools can compare them with the chart above.
When will score reports show only the 1–6 scale?
ETS says reports will show the 1–6 bands, the CEFR level and a comparable 0–120 score until January 2028. After that, they will show only the 1–6 scale.
Does Suzu give official TOEFL scores?
No. Only ETS gives official TOEFL scores. Suzu's speaking and writing scores are practice estimates to help you decide what to study next.
