TOEFL score converter: 0–120 to the new 1–6 scale

Quick answer

Since January 21, 2026, each TOEFL iBT section and the overall score use a 1–6 scale. On the old 0–120 scale, 95–106 is a 5 (C1), 86–94 is a 4.5 (B2) and 72–85 is a 4 (B2).

These use ETS's published charts. They are not an official score.

How the overall band works

ETS averages your four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band, with halfway rounding up. Bands of 5, 5, 5 and 5.5 average 5.125, which rounds to 5. Bands of 5, 5, 5.5 and 5.5 average 5.25, which rounds up to 5.5.

New score reports show the middle of each range as the comparable 0–120 score, so a 4.5 shows as 90.

ETS's charts don't always agree, for example for listening scores of 13 and 14. Right at a cut point, treat the band as approximate and check the ETS score scale page.

CEFR levels

Score reports also show a CEFR level: C2 is a 6, C1 is 5 or 5.5, B2 is 4 or 4.5, B1 is 3 or 3.5, A2 is 2 or 2.5, and A1 is 1 or 1.5.

Questions

What is a good TOEFL score on the new scale?

It depends on the school. Many ask for 80 to 100 on the 0–120 scale, roughly 4 to 5 on the new scale. Check each school's own requirement.

Are TOEFL scores from before 2026 still valid?

Yes, for two years from the test date. They stay on the 0–120 scale, and schools compare them with the chart above.

When will score reports show only the 1–6 scale?

From January 2028. Until then, reports also show the CEFR level and a comparable 0–120 score.

Does Suzu give official TOEFL scores?

No. Only ETS gives official scores. Suzu's speaking and writing scores are practice estimates.
